To this end, SMD CSR policy includes various general community support projects - that do not fall into the four main focus area - but neverless are important for the development, support and well-being of the surrounding communities.
We are involved in the maintenance, and in some cases construction, of access roads to the villages.
Every festive season, as responsive corporate citizens, SMD donates food parcels to the vulnerable, disabled or needy community residents to offer them an opportunity to also enjoy the festivities.
We facilitate and support sporting activities in the villages by donating football and netball sports kits and balls. We organise and sponsor friendly sports tournaments against other mines and villages in the area. This is always a lot of fun! Many friendships are forged over these friendly matches.
Focusing on environmental issues such as water management, we recently hosted a water conservation campaign involving the mine employees and community to educate on both the environmental and economic impact of resource management.
We lend our support to the Basotho cultural practices by donating bulls to the Lihloahloeng village youth initiation school.
